The house is situated in the small Umbrian Village of Villastrada,
which is about 4 Km from the border with Tuscany. To find it on
the map, look at the centre of Italy and you will see a large lake,
Lago Trasimeno, the village lies about 10 Km south west of the lake
in the direction of Chiusi.
The house is situated near the centre of the village yet has ample
parking space. The house has been completely restored and redecorated.
But still retains its tiled floors whitewashed walls and original
exposed beam ceilings. It has been attractively furnished and fully
equipped for all year occupancy.
The garden is at the side of the house and from it you have lovely
views over the surrounding countryside, which take in Cortona to
the side and Montepulciano to the rear.
As a base for touring the local area it is ideal, being central
for Florence and Pisa to the North, Rome and Orvieto to the south,
Siena and Montepulciano to the west and Assisi, Perugia and Todi
to the east. It is said that within a radius equivalent to a two-hour
journey you can see 20% of the world’s artistic heritage.
Villastrada is set on a hill amid rolling countryside and is surrounded
by olive groves and vineyards. Other crops, depending on the time
of the year, are sunflowers, maize, tobacco, melon and tomatoes
plus anything else they think may grow. It is not by accident
that Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy.
Within the village there is a general store which is rightly famous
for its meat counter, a post office, a ladies hair dressers a
general agricultural store and a church. There is also the Sportivo
or sports field where fiestas and barbecues are held through out
the summer. These provide a good chance to taste the local food
dishes, sample the wine and watch or join in the general fun.
English is not spoken in the village so you will need to take
your phrase book!
